PROJECT BETA
Circulated to the UFO community in late 1981, Project Beta: Summary and Report of Status (With Suggested Guidelines) is a remarkable and, in hindsight, tragic documentation of Paul Bennewitz’s magnificent obsession. In the kind of detail that one would get only from an engineer of Bennewitz’s brilliance, it summarizes the data that he had amassed and built into his labyrinthine fantasy. The tragedy is that, unlike other well-known entries in the literature of mental illness, we know that this one was as much a result of the disinformation being fed to Bennewitz via AFOSI, as of his own imagining. It also reveals the extraordinary extent to which AFOSI’s perception management operation went to provide Bennewitz with false information.
The twenty-five-page report opens with a summary of the information gathered by ‘Investigator – Physicist – Paul F. Bennewitz’.
Detection and disassembly of alien communication and video channels – both local, earth, and near space. Constant reception of video from alien ship and underground base viewscreen; Typical alien, humanoid and at times apparent Homo Sapiens.
Established constant direct communications with the Alien using a computer and a form of Hex Decimal Code with Graphics and print-out. Through the alien communication loop, the true underground base location was divulged by the alien and precisely pin-pointed. Subsequent aerial and ground photographs revealed landing pylons, ships on the ground – entrances, beam weapons and apparent launch ports – along with aliens on the ground in electrostatically supported vehicles; charging beam weapons also apparently electrostatic.
Bennewitz outlines what he has learned about alien psychology: ‘The alien is devious, employs deception, has no intent of any apparent peace-making process and obviously does not adhere to any prior-arranged agreement.’
While he was referring to the extraterrestrials that he believed were inside Archuleta Mesa, he might just as well have been talking about his ‘friends’ at Kirtland. At times he seemed to be drawing attention to inconsistencies in the information being fed to him: ‘In truth they tend to lie, however their memory for lying is not long and direct comparative computer printout analysis reveals this fact. Therefore much “drops through the crack” so to speak; and from this comes the apparent truth.’
Later on he says of the aliens:
They are not to be trusted. It is suspected if one was considered a ‘friend’ and if one were to call upon that ‘friend’ in time of dire physical threat, the ‘friend’ would quickly side with the other side . . . They cannot under any circumstances be trusted . . . They are totally deceptive and death oriented and have no moral respect for human or human life . . . No agreement signed by both parties will ever be adhered to nor recognized and respected by the alien, though they might attempt to make us believe otherwise.
It’s hard not to read these statements as brief moments of unconscious clarity about his situation that, thanks to the effectiveness of the campaign against him, were directed at the shadows on the wall, rather than the hands casting them.
